The aim of this project is to connect digital whiteboards (e.g. Intoi, www.intoi.net) and their users to collaborate on different places of the earth. Multiple problems occur when users should work together, but their only connection is an internet connection. This application tries to enable a fast way to create and share content with others while working on a digital infinite sized surface. The focus was on the application’s intuitive usability, to overcome the spatial separation of the members of the meeting.

INTOI is a digital, interactive whiteboard that introduces new methods for brainstorming, content presentation and knowledge transfer.

Both the INTOI application and its unique user interface are designed to enable an innovative and intuitive user interaction paradigm for multiple users. The users can draw and write on a digital projected surface with digital Anoto pens, as well as load and create images, Microsoft PowerPoint or Adobe PDF files. Participants can upload their own files or download the current screen directly onto/from the projection surface by using a small desktop application.

A pie menu can be called tapping the pen on the display surface to change a property, tool or setting. Navigation on the page of infinite size is performed by simple hand gestures.

Paperizer is a paper-based interface which combines the physical (real) with the digital world: while interacting with real paper printouts, users can seamlessly work with a digital whiteboard at the same time. Users are able to send data from a real paper to the digital world by picking up the content (e.g. images) from real printouts and drop it on the digital surface. The reverse direction for transferring data from the whiteboard to the real paper is supported through printouts of the whiteboard page that are enhanced with integrated Anoto patterns.

We developed a terrain engine for visualizing large triangle data as well as bitmap/height maps. The GUI was built with Qt; the rendering is done in OpenGL. During this course we learnt a lot about generating virtual 3D worlds, as well as store this large data and develop fast algorithms to visualize those (Level of Detail algorithms/LOD).
